FAQs
Use eSIM plans on more of the devices you already own
A physical eSIM adapter is a programmable card that fits into a compatible physical SIM slot. It stores supported downloadable eSIM profiles and presents the selected profile to the device like a physical SIM.
Switch eSIM adapters are designed for compatible Android phones, iPhones with physical SIM slots, routers, hotspots, tablets and other SIM-enabled equipment. Actual compatibility depends on the exact device model, regional variant, operating system, mobile network and eSIM provider.
Use this guide to choose the right Switch eSIM product, check compatibility, install a profile and solve common setup problems.
Quick recommendation: Choose Switch eSIM Pro for a compatible Android phone. Choose Switch eSIM Max when you need Android and iPhone flexibility. Add the Bluetooth eSIM Card Reader when you need to manage profiles from an iPhone or outside a compatible Android phone.
Understanding physical eSIM adapters
1. What is a physical eSIM adapter?
A physical eSIM adapter is a programmable card that fits into a device’s physical SIM slot and stores downloadable eSIM profiles. It can bring supported eSIM plans to compatible phones and connected devices that do not have convenient built-in eSIM management.
Unlike a normal SIM, one Switch eSIM Adapter can store multiple supported profiles, allowing you to select the one you need without carrying several physical SIM cards.
2. How does a Switch eSIM Adapter work?
Insert the adapter into a compatible SIM-card slot, use the Switch Android app or Bluetooth reader to download a supported eSIM profile, and select the profile you want to use.
After installation and selection, the device recognizes the adapter as its mobile SIM. Network access still depends on the device’s supported frequency bands, carrier status, plan coverage and network configuration.
3. Can Switch eSIM add eSIM support to a phone without built-in eSIM?
Yes, if the phone is compatible and has a physical SIM slot. The adapter stores the eSIM profile instead of relying on a built-in eSIM chip.
Compatibility is not universal. Check the phone’s exact model number, regional variant, operating-system version, SIM slot and carrier-lock status before purchasing.
4. Does Switch eSIM convert my existing physical SIM into an eSIM?
No. Switch eSIM does not copy or convert the credentials from an existing physical SIM.
If you want to move an existing mobile number, your carrier must issue a supported eSIM activation method, such as a QR code or manual activation details. Carrier approval and transfer rules still apply.
5. Is an eSIM data plan included with the adapter?
A standard Switch eSIM Adapter is hardware used to store and manage profiles; it does not automatically include mobile service.
You normally purchase a compatible eSIM plan separately. Switch eSIM also offers selected packages with preloaded destination data plans, so check the individual product description before ordering. (switchesim.com)
6. How many eSIM profiles can a Switch eSIM Adapter store?
A Switch eSIM Adapter can store up to 15 supported eSIM profiles. You can keep plans for different destinations or providers on the adapter and select the appropriate profile when needed. (switchesim.com)
The available capacity may depend on the size and configuration of the profiles being installed.
7. Can I use two stored profiles simultaneously?
The adapter lets you store multiple profiles and select the profile you want to use. Storing 15 profiles does not mean all 15 operate simultaneously.
Whether another mobile line can remain active at the same time depends on your phone’s dual-SIM hardware, operating system and carrier configuration.
Choosing a Switch eSIM product
8. What is the difference between Switch eSIM Pro and Switch eSIM Max?
Switch eSIM Pro is designed primarily for compatible Android devices. Switch eSIM Max is designed for compatible Android and iOS devices.
Choose Pro when you plan to manage profiles directly from a supported Android phone. Choose Max when you want greater flexibility across Android and iPhone or intend to manage the adapter with the Bluetooth Card Reader. (switchesim.com)
9. Which adapter should I buy for Android?
Choose Switch eSIM Pro for a compatible Android phone when you only need Android profile management.
Choose Switch eSIM Max if you expect to move the adapter between Android, iPhone or other compatible devices. Check your exact phone model before buying either version.
10. Which adapter should I buy for iPhone?
Choose Switch eSIM Max for a compatible iPhone that has a physical SIM-card slot.
Some iPhone configurations, including eSIM-only models without a physical SIM tray, cannot accept a physical adapter. Profile installation and management from iOS may require the Switch Bluetooth eSIM Card Reader. (switchesim.com)
11. What does the Bluetooth eSIM Card Reader do?
The Switch Bluetooth eSIM Card Reader lets compatible Android and iPhone users download, activate, deactivate and manage profiles on a Switch eSIM Adapter.
Insert the adapter into the reader, connect over Bluetooth or Type-C, enter or scan the eSIM activation details and manage the profile through the supported app. The reader is especially useful for iPhone users and devices that cannot directly configure the adapter. (switchesim.com)
12. Do iPhone users need the Bluetooth reader?
The reader is recommended when you need to install, delete, activate or change profiles from an iPhone.
Another possible workflow is to configure and select a profile using a compatible Android device, then move the adapter to a compatible iPhone. However, the reader provides a more convenient iOS management workflow.
Device compatibility
13. How do I check whether my phone is compatible?
Check all five factors:
- Exact phone name and model number
- Country or regional variant
- Current Android or iOS version
- Presence of a compatible physical SIM slot
- Whether the phone is carrier-unlocked
Do not rely only on the marketing name. The same phone may use different hardware or SIM configurations in different countries.
Community discussions repeatedly show that compatibility should be recorded at model, region and operating-system level—and should distinguish profile installation from actual network connectivity. (reddit.com)
14. Does Switch eSIM work with every Android phone?
No. Switch eSIM works with compatible Android devices, not every Android phone.
A phone may recognize the adapter but be unable to manage profiles, or it may install a profile but fail to connect because of a carrier, APN, frequency-band or device restriction. Confirm compatibility using the exact model and regional variant.
15. Does Switch eSIM work with every iPhone?
No. Switch eSIM Max requires a compatible iPhone with a usable physical SIM slot.
An eSIM-only iPhone without a physical SIM tray cannot accept a physical Switch eSIM Adapter. Other models may use the selected profile normally but require the Bluetooth reader or a compatible Android device for profile management.
16. Does my phone need to be carrier-unlocked?
Yes, an unlocked device is generally required when using a plan from a different carrier or eSIM provider.
A carrier-locked phone may reject the new network even if it recognizes the adapter. Contact the original carrier if you are uncertain about your phone’s lock status.
17. Can I use Switch eSIM in a router, hotspot or tablet?
Potentially. After loading and selecting a profile, the adapter may work in a compatible router, MiFi hotspot, tablet, tracker, camera or other device with an appropriate physical SIM slot.
Because many connected devices cannot install profiles themselves, configure the adapter first with a compatible Android phone or Bluetooth reader. You may also need to enter the provider’s APN in the target device. (switchesim.com)
18. Can I move a configured adapter between devices?
A configured adapter may be moved between compatible devices, but network operation is not guaranteed on every device.
The destination device must support the adapter’s physical size, relevant mobile-network bands, carrier requirements and APN configuration. Turn both devices off before moving the card to reduce the risk of errors.
Providers, plans and activation
19. Can I use an eSIM from any provider?
Switch eSIM is designed to work with supported profiles from different providers, but universal compatibility cannot be promised.
Profiles supplied through a standard QR code or manual activation details are generally the most suitable. A plan may not work if the provider requires activation exclusively through its proprietary app, verifies a supported device’s IMEI or blocks adapter-based installation. (switchesim.com)
20. Can I install an Airalo, Holafly, Nomad or other travel eSIM?
You may be able to install a profile from a third-party travel provider if it supplies compatible QR-code or manual activation details and permits adapter installation.
Before paying, confirm:
- The provider supplies an installable QR code or activation code
- The plan supports your destination
- Tethering is permitted if needed
- The profile can be installed on an external adapter
- Your phone supports the destination network’s bands
Avoid claiming that every plan from a named provider will always work.
21. How do I install an eSIM profile?
The standard process is:
- Connect your phone to reliable Wi-Fi.
- Insert the adapter into a compatible Android phone or Bluetooth reader.
- Open the appropriate Switch app.
- Scan the provider’s QR code or enter its activation details.
- Wait until the download finishes.
- Label and select the profile.
- Insert the adapter into the device you want to use.
- Restart the device if necessary.
- Select the adapter for mobile data.
- Enter the provider’s APN and enable roaming if instructed.
Do not delete the QR code until you have confirmed that the profile is working.
22. Can an eSIM QR code be used more than once?
Sometimes, but many eSIM QR codes are single-use. The provider—not Switch eSIM—controls whether a profile can be downloaded again.
Before deleting, resetting or moving an important profile, ask the provider whether it can issue replacement activation details. Never publish or share your QR code because it may contain credentials for downloading your plan.
23. Can I transfer a native eSIM from my phone to the adapter?
You generally cannot copy an installed profile directly from your phone.
Ask the carrier to transfer the line or issue a replacement eSIM activation. Whether this is available depends on the carrier, plan, country and identity-verification requirements.
24. When does my travel plan start?
The eSIM provider determines when the validity period begins. Some plans start when the profile first connects to a supported destination network; others begin when the profile is installed or purchased.
Check the provider’s activation policy before downloading your plan. If it starts on installation, do not install it too early.
Travel, calls and mobile data
25. Can I use Switch eSIM for international travel?
Yes. You can store supported local, regional or global travel profiles and select the plan intended for your destination.
Install and test the adapter before departure, but verify when the plan’s validity begins. Keep your activation details, provider instructions and APN available offline.
26. How do I avoid roaming charges on my primary line?
Select the travel profile as the mobile-data line and disable data roaming for your primary line. Turn off automatic cellular-data switching if your phone provides that option.
The travel eSIM may itself require data roaming to be enabled, because it can connect through partner networks. Follow the plan provider’s instructions carefully.
27. Can I keep receiving calls and verification texts on my main number?
Possibly, if your phone supports the required dual-SIM configuration and you keep the primary line active.
Receiving calls or texts abroad may result in carrier charges. Check your home carrier’s roaming and Wi-Fi Calling policies before travel, especially if you rely on the number for banking or account recovery.
28. Do Switch eSIM plans support calls and SMS?
Calls and SMS depend entirely on the installed plan. Many travel eSIM products are data-only and do not include a traditional phone number.
You can still use internet-based services such as WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or Telegram over a working data connection.
29. Can I use my phone’s hotspot with Switch eSIM?
Usually, if both the device and installed eSIM plan permit tethering.
Some providers restrict hotspot use or impose separate data limits. If the hotspot option is unavailable, check the provider’s rules and verify that its APN has been entered correctly.
30. Does Switch eSIM support 4G or 5G?
The adapter does not independently create 4G or 5G access. Available network technology depends on the phone or router, eSIM plan, carrier, local coverage and supported frequency bands.
A plan advertised as 5G may connect at 4G where 5G coverage or device support is unavailable.
Troubleshooting
31. Why does my phone show “No SIM”?
Try these steps:
- Turn the device off.
- Remove and inspect the adapter.
- Reinsert it securely in the correct orientation.
- Turn the device on.
- Test the other SIM slot, if available.
- Confirm that the phone is compatible.
- Test the adapter in another known-compatible device.
If it works elsewhere, record the failing phone’s exact model, region and operating-system version before contacting support.
32. Why is my profile installed but mobile data is not working?
Check the following in order:
- The correct profile is active
- The adapter is selected for mobile data
- The phone is carrier-unlocked
- Data roaming is enabled if required
- The correct APN is entered
- Airplane mode has been toggled
- Automatic or manual network selection works
- The plan covers your current country
- The plan still has data and has not expired
- Your device supports the local network bands
APN, roaming and mobile-data selection are recurring sources of travel-eSIM connection problems. (reddit.com)
33. Why does the activation code say “already used”?
The provider may have issued a single-use QR code that was consumed during an earlier download attempt.
Do not repeatedly delete and reinstall the profile. Contact the provider and request replacement activation details. Switch eSIM cannot regenerate credentials issued by another company.
34. Why does the plan work in one phone but not another?
The second phone may use different network bands, SIM-slot behavior, APN settings, carrier restrictions or operating-system support.
Record the exact model and regional variant of both devices. “Working in one phone” confirms the adapter and profile function, but it does not establish compatibility with every device.
35. What information should I send to support?
Include:
- Phone or device brand
- Exact model number
- Country or regional variant
- Operating-system version
- Switch Pro or Switch Max
- Profile-management method
- eSIM provider and plan
- Current country
- Exact error message
- Whether the adapter is detected
- Whether the profile installed successfully
- APN and roaming settings
- Relevant screenshots
Hide QR codes, activation codes, EIDs, ICCIDs, personal numbers and account information.
